Spring Into Beauty Trends!

Ah, spring.  The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining.  It is the official end of the chilly, winter days. In the middle of January, it is painful to even think about breaking out our spring attire during these cold months.  The thought of our bare legs being exposed to the icy winds of winter sends chills up our spines.  However, it’s much less painful to break out your spring make up!  Here are a few ways to bring a little springtime to your winter days.

On the runway, many spring collections featured a bright lip.  Models lips were seen painted bright shades of fuschia, coral, purple, and red.  Marc Jacobs’ 70’s inspired collection was paired with bright lips in shades of purple and coral and dark eyes to create a groovy, sultry palette.  Diane Von Furstenberg’s spring/summer 2011 collection featured models with bright pink lips and a clean, bare face.  Some models wore dark, circle shaped sunglasses and paired with the bright lips, the look was effortlessly cool.  Models at Alice + Olivia’s spring/summer 2011 showing wore bright orange lips and paired again with a clean, bare face.  Alice + Olivia’s youthful collection went perfectly with the fun look.

Which leads me to my next make up trend for spring: a flawless, clean face.  Jenn Hix, make up expert at Sephora, said,

“It’s definitely going to be one of the biggest trends for the season, like that natural, radiant beauty.  It’s definitely been a big trend in the last couple of years.  I think it will never go away.”

Another big trend for the spring are flushed cheeks.  At Michael Kors, models looked as if they just went running in a field in his collection with their perfectly disheveled locks and flushed, pink cheeks.  Paired with the beautiful neutral palette of his collection, the pink cheeks and light, bronze eyes looked fresh.  At Thakoon, the models looked sun kissed with a bronzey, peach cheek and clean face.

Going along with the bright lips this season, the bright eye was everywhere on the runways.  At Derek Lam, Estee Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux and a team of 14 make up artists lined the models’ eyes with an orange liner and winged it out at the side.  At Jason Wu, the models’ eyes were framed with vivid shades of blues, greens, and purples.  With the slicked back, braided up-do the models wore, the smokey technicolor eyes looked elegant.  At Peter Som, the models’ eyes were lined with a bright yellow eyeliner, much like at Derek Lam.  The yellow popped out from the neutral palette of the face.

Remember: It’s never too late, or too cold, to bring a little pop of color into your life.

THE INTERVIEW

How would you describe your style?

“I think that I’m a mix of trendy and girly.  I’ve moved into comfortable and loose fitting, though.”

What beauty product do you use more often?

“Foundation (Clinique Acne Solution Foundation).  I like, rely on foundation.  Even when I’m not wearing any other make up, I still put on foundation.”

What is your favorite beauty line?

“Clinique, definitely.  It’s light but it does what you want it to do.  It’s good for your skin, too!”

Name one product you would suggest to every girl.

Benefit One Hot Minute Bronzer.  It adds that perfect sparkle.”

What is your favorite spring beauty trend?

“I like the subtle, bronzey cheeks.  I’ve seen it a lot in magazines.  I like subtle color on the face.”

Good evening, world.

Yves Saint Laurent once said, “fashions fade, style is eternal.”

Style is something that many people view differently.  Some may say that throwing on a pair of sweats, a t-shirt, and putting their hair up into a ponytail is “style” while others may say that it is actually “a cop out”.  I view style as a way for people to express themselves whether it is through their clothing, make up, hair, or accessories.  I also believe that style is a way for people to show themselves off, or in some cases, hide themselves.

I go throughout my days looking for people with great style.  I’m not just talking about what I believe is great.  I also mean people who have a style that is all their own; whether or not I relate to their style is completely irrelevant.  I have always admired street style blogs and have followed ones such as streetpeeper and the sartorialist religiously.  They have a way of capturing street style in an objective and fresh way.  As a journalism major in college, I admire their ability to document these fashionable people in photographs that are simply beautiful.

This blog, however, is not just a street style blog.  I will also blog about things going on in the fashion world such as current trends.  I am the type of person that sits in their dorm room and watches fashion shows over youtube because I’m not necessarily fortunate enough to go to them.  I watched basically all of the spring/summer 2011 fashion shows via youtube and I did it all in one sitting.

THE INTERVIEW

What would you describe your style as?

“Black and focused on keeping myself warm.”

What would you consider “good style”?

“I usually like hipster-y style that is not too elitist.  I like menswear like flannels”

What made you choose to wear what you are wearing right now?

“Well, I really like this scarf and I wear it all the time.  I wanted to look a little cute so I put on a dress.  This cardigan is basically because it’s kind of cold outside.”

What is your beauty routine?

“I really don’t do a whole lot.  I mean, when I remember, I will take off my make up before I go to bed.  I basically brush my teeth and pluck my eyebrows.  I am very low maintenance.”

Describe what ‘style’ is in your own words.

“Like, wearing clothes that you feel comfortable in while still feeling attractive.  I guess it is a good way of self expression”

  • WHO: Lauren Gray, 18, English major.
  • WHAT: top, Urban Outfitters; jeans, Lucky Brand; boots, Anthropologie; necklace, Chico’s.

THE INTERVIEW

What would you describe your style as?

“Pretty classic.  Feminine and simple.”

Who has influenced your style the most?

“Hm…honestly, I’d say my close friend, Amber Charton.  She has also a very classic feel to her clothes.  Very almost, vintage-y.  Think like an Anthropologie catalogue, basically.  It’s hard to say anything specifically.  I just take ideas from other fashion blogs and friends.”

Who is your favorite designer?

“Classics like Chloe or Dior.  Also, whoever designs for Anthropologie.  I don’t know names, I only know brands, really.”

What beauty product do you use most often?

“Moisturizer.”

Describe what ‘style’ is in your own words.

“I think style is a way to express who you are and I think style should transcend time.  I don’t think it should just be in the moment.  I think people with real style are people who can look beautiful without going to extremes.”
